Energy storage facility, UK. Image by Harmony Energy. Battery energy storage projects totalling 627.4 MW have secured contracts in the UK’s 2023-24 Capacity Market auction, representing an increase of more than 60% compared to the previous round, the National Grid Electricity System Operator (NGESO) announced last week.
Battery energy storage projects accounted for 10.9% of the total awarded capacity, followed by 2.6 GW of gas-fired power plants and 1.4 GW of nuclear capacity. About four-fifths of the capacity procured in the auction across 269 capacity market units (CMU) was from existing power assets, the auction results showed.
In last year’s auction 5.3 GW (12%) of capacity awarded contracts was from new-build units. Batteries saw the highest levels of new-build capacity, winning contracts by both derated (1 GW) and connection (5.6 GW) capacity. 5.7 GW of battery connection capacity received contracts across new-build and existing units.
According to provisional auction results released by NGESO, almost half of the winning battery projects propose one-hour duration systems, while about 40% are for two-hour facilities. The list of winning schemes includes Zenobe, Gresham House, Harmony Energy, Pivot Power and SUSI Storage, among others.
